I’m Not Your Negro-Film and Conversation

It takes a special container to have difficult conversations. Rev. Derek Terry and Meg Bruck—a male, African American UCC minister, and a female practitioner of Zen— are friends, veteran facilitators, and racial justice activist, joining the Hive to make space for such a conversation. We’ll gather first for potluck and setting the stage. Then 90 minutes to view the film in its entirety, followed by another 45 minutes for facilitated discussion. Please be intentional to participate in the entire time if you register.

About the Film:

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, “Remember This House.” The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of this manuscript. Filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished.

This 90 minute PG-13 movie, Nominated for an Oscar in 2016, is a compilation of footage from Balwin as well as cultural references spaning from Doris Day to the blatk panthers. Baldwin asks compelling questions about racism in America in the 60s, 70s, and 80s and leaves viewers in 2017 to consider how are these thoughts remain in play today, in us all.

About the Conversation:

At the Hive, we shape these and other similar events like Courage to Connect, and Café Cultura, as Brave Space, meaning, they are never perfectly “safe space” but that the invitation and facilatation is rooted in an intention to make brave space together for difficult yet tranformative relational possibilties.
