Chase Public Book Swap

Looking for something to read? Do you trust the taste and generosity of your friends and neighbors? Do you have great taste in books? Are you feeling generous? Join us! for Chase Public’s first ever Book Swap, cohosted by Lauren Byrd.

Here’s how it’s going to work:

In the tradition of cringe-worthy family holiday white elephant gift exchanges, we are asking each person to bring one book (you don’t have to wrap it). It should be a book that you enjoy, that you sincerely recommend- but know, you won’t be getting it back. It will be a true gift from you to another member of your community.

Once the event begins, we will circle up, and everyone will have a few minutes to give a brief overview of the book they have brought- a chance to explain why you like it, why you think other people might, and a bit of what the book is about.

After everyone has shared about their contribution, we will place our names and contact info onto bookmarks, place them into books, and place books on the table in the center. Then we will each draw a number from a hat, and following white elephant rules, whoever draws number 1 will make their selection. After that, number 2, 3, etc. will have the option of either stealing the book that person number 1 selected, or selecting a new book from the pile. Each book may only be stolen up to 3 times; after the third steal the book has found its forever home.

Once the gifts have been given, folks are free to hang out and talk to the donator of their new cherished literary friend, or they can get started, or they could go home or to the bar or whatever. **In a dream world, we reconnect with the person who gave the book we read, and have a conversation once we’ve finished it**
