Artist Statement by Paula Dupuy
In 2010, I retired from The University of Toledo as a professor of Counseling and School Psychology. I had spent years as a practicing psychologist and counselor, and teacher, researcher, and academician. I moved back to Cincinnati, locating in Northside. After 35 years in the field of mental health, I began painting.
In 2011, I began art classes with Diane Debevec at Essex Studios. Those classes have evolved into weekly studio time with other women artists. It has been (and continues to be) a welcomed major transition from academe.
I began painting in watercolor and recently added acrylics and pastels to my mediums. I am learning to be in the world differently… seeing differently. I observe color, light and shape and try to hold the tension between form and detail and what I see and what I feel. It is a process of looking closer and stepping back, a rhythm of observation that I try to capture in my paintings.
I find inspiration in the natural world. These images are developed from what I see around me: my garden, landscapes from travels, and walks in woods, beaches, and fields. These paintings are the outcome of taking a closer look.
