SUMMARY:5th Anniversary Northside Square Dance
DESCRIPTION:Calling all dancers and old-time musicians! PARTY in the backroom at Northside Tavern celebrating our fifth year of making square dances together! Russ Childers & Friends\, callers; music by the Northside Volunteers. (Bring baked goods for our traditional cakewalk\, too.) Tues June 13\, 8-10:30pm. $5 donation per dancer. \nHISTORY: The Northside Square Dance movement began when Nathan Rutz wanted to have a birthday square dance party with all his friends and neighbors in Northside. He hired Russ Childers to call the dance and the Rabbit Hash String Band to play\, and the rest is history. We’ve moved the dance from Off the Avenue and the North Presbyterian Church — and now\, for the past five years\, we are still doing it\, the 2nd Tuesday of every month\, in the back room of the historic Northside Tavern. Come be a part of history! Musicians join the old-time veteran band members onstage; dancers on the floor. Beginners welcomed; all dances taught. Nobody needs to know nuttin’ but how to smile!

SUMMARY:Maureen Wood's Celebration of Life
DESCRIPTION:Maureen was a life-long social activist\, dedicated to empowering children and women of all ages and in every sphere of life: at home\, in school\, and at work. She had a driving need to not only help\, but to really connect with people of all walks of life. Maureen was a creative visionary with a unique sense of style\, blending communal and personal spaces in uncommon locations in a way that was incredibly inviting and intriguing to the people exploring those places. \nMaureen was loved by so many that we decided to have an open house style celebration; From late morning gathering to late night dancing! (We have several musicians that want to be a part of this special day). We will also have a time for people to share special memories they have of Maureen. \nSilverglades graciously donated food for our 11am-5pm time block and in pure “Maureen fashion\,” 5:00pm-11:00pm we will be having it potluck style. Bring a dish and memory to share. \nIf you would like to share any pictures please email them to memoriesofmaureenwood@gmail.com \nDonations can be made at http://www.gofundme.com/maureenwood \n****We will be closing down the Celebration for Maureen at 9 pm on Saturday. And\, no dancing. \nSorry folks but we need to be safe and treat that building well. \nPlease be aware that there might be delays getting in the building if the crowds are too large. \nStill looking forward to time with you and see you either during the day or at the 5:00 potluck. \nPlease share this information with anyone and everyone.****

SUMMARY:Flying Underground / Gay Neighbors / Copper
DESCRIPTION:/// Flying Underground /// \nSinger/songwriter/guitarist\, Brian Lovely\, lost his voice to a neurological curse\, and went in search of a singer. Enter Kelly McCracken. The result is power trio + kick ass singer\, otherwise known as Flying Underground. \nAlong with Chris Arduser on drums and bassist David Ramos\, Flying Underground is a post- The Who / Big Star / early Aerosmith (Give him a break\, Lovely was born in Boston)/ Television / Replacements/ Guided By Voices\, blah blah blah…kinda thing. A bit proggy and psychedelic. Attitudinally owing much to the likes of John Lennon\, Robyn Hitchcock and Randy Newman\, lyrics are visceral\, often whimsical and oblique\, but always heretical and subversive\, thank you very much. In other words\, a rock band. Duh. \n/// Gay Neighbors /// \nGay Neighbors is a Chicago band originally formed in Bloomington-Normal\, Illinois. Their experimental brand of heavy-psych rock rarely heard broke through the music scene of the sleepy college town in 2013. For years\, the group’s five members\, Aesop Adams\, Aaron Dooley\, Dylan Freed\, Wally Houldsworth\, and Travis Ralph crossed paths playing in various bands before ultimately joining forces to form Gay Neighbors. Playing-out and establishing themselves as the house band at Reverberation Vinyl\, the band released their first album\, Condescend for a Dream\, in October of 2015. Since the release of Condescend\, Gay Neighbors have continued to hone their craft and develop their unique sound. After releasing a several singles over the last year\, Gay Neighbors is set to release a new EP\, entitled Primordial in December 2016. \n/// Copper /// \nI started Copper in the summer of 2013 as a recording project for pop/rock/folk songs I have written over the past decade as a Cincinnati guitarist/singer. Copper’s debut disc–“Fade to White”–is scheduled for release on June 13\, 2014\, and was produced and recorded by Matt Hueneman of Cattle Dog Productions. It features 9 original songs written by me\, and I also sang and played guitar and most of the bass tracks. Many other local musicians contributed time\, talent and encouragement in the making of this disc: Chris Arduser on drums\, percussion and mandolin; George Cunningham and Brian Lovely on lead guitars; Matt Hueneman\, who added guitar and keyboard tracks in addition to his producer’s role; Krystal Peterson on vocals; Charlie Fletcher on piano and Hohner; Ben Walkenhauer and Randy Villars on horns; and Bob Nyswonger on bass. (I even managed to snag Rob Fetters one day for a tasty guitar track on “The Daily Dead.”) I could not\, and would not have done it without these superbly gifted men and women. \nIt has been a long journey. The songs are about people I have met or known about in my nearly sixty years\, and the stories are all true–though the names have been changed in some instances to protect the guilty. I hope you like the songs.

SUMMARY:Alan Licht / Knee Play / Pete Fosco & Paulina Michels
DESCRIPTION:No Response Presents: \nAlan Licht\n(Esteemed author\, journalist\, sound artist\, minimalist\, and rock musician- collaborates often with Lee Ranadlo\, Jim O-Rourke\, etc. Promoting his solo acoustic record on VDSQ )\nhttp://www.alanlicht.com/ \nKnee Play\n(Electro Acoustic Sound art crew)\nhttp://www.intermedio.io/knee-play/ \nPete Fosco & Paulina Michels\n(Guitar textures and outside the kit percussion) \nFriday\, June 9th\n9pm / Free / 21+ \nThe Comet\n4579 Hamilton Ave. \n—————————————————————————– \nBorn in 1968 and raised in New Jersey\, I took guitar lessons at the age of ten and went on to play in typical high school cover bands and to study jazz guitar privately with Buck Brown. In my late teens\, as my interests expanded to the avant-garde\, I attended a seminar on improvisation given by noted west coast guitarist Henry Kaiser. Enrolling at Vassar College\, I studied electronic music with Linda Fisher and composition with Annea Lockwood and Richard Wilson. By the time I graduated in 1990\, I had already published articles on Minimalist composers La Monte Young\, Tony Conrad\, Rhys Chatham\, and Charlemagne Palestine\, and had recorded with former John Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali (on Rudolph Grey’s Mask of Light LP). \nRelocating to New York City\, I focused on pursuing free improvisation (with Rudolph Grey’s group the Blue Humans and guitarist Loren Mazzacane Connors) as well as indie rock (the bands Love Child and Run On\, as well as a brief stint with legendary 60s psychedelic rock band Arthur Lee & Love). I also began developing a repertoire of structured improvisation pieces for solo electric guitar\, documented on a series of albums starting with 1994’s Sink the Aging Process. These brought together my interests in reharmonization (from jazz and classical music)\, process\, repetition\, and extended duration (from Minimalism)\, and the textural vocabularies of rock and noise music. The albums also include tape pieces and organ works. In 1998 I began writing frequently for the British experimental music magazine The WIRE\, doing several cover stories and other features. In 2000 I started handling bookings at Tonic\, the estimable New York venue dedicated to showcasing a wide range of alternative music\, from free improvisation to underground rock to electronica to the jazz and classical avant-gardes. This brought me into contact with numerous musicians\, and I performed at Tonic myself countless times. In 2001 I co-founded the ensemble Text of Light with Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo\, a project that brings together free improvisation with screenings of historic examples of experimental cinema. Text of Light emphasizes the chance correspondences between what is happening onscreen and what is happening in the music\, as a kind of live\, real-time mixed-media collage. Subsequently I have made audiovisual collaborations with video artist and long-time Merce Cunningham associate Charles Atlas and Emmy-winning painter\, designer and comics artist Gary Panter\, which operated under similar principles. 2002 saw the publication of my first book\, An Emotional Memoir of Martha Quinn\, an extended personal essay about coming of age as a rock fan and musician. In 2007 my second book\, Sound Art: Beyond Music\, Between Categories was published – significant as the first full-length study of sound installations and sound sculpture to be published in English\, and the first to examine the genre mainly from an art historical\, rather than a quasi-philosophical\, viewpoint. \nAny free improviser is also an audience member\, as he or she is hearing the music for the first time. I brought this idea to performances I organized under the name the Digger Choir at Issue Project Room in 2003-2004 that conflated the roles of audience member and performer. Everyone who attended was responsible for performing the music-singing John Stevens’ Sustained Piece and Yoko Ono’s John Let’s Hope For Piece as well as my own pieces like Subway Piece\, in which they were instructed to read a magazine or book they would ordinarily read to themselves in transit out loud. The idea of speaking texts aloud that are meant to be read silently also occurs in two of my recent sound installations: On Deaf Ears (2009)\, in which an article about the possible hearing loss incurred by listening to music on iPod earbuds at high volume was recorded being read aloud\, and played as a loop on AVA Gallery’s outdoor speakers; and Cross Promotion (2010)\, in which the proprietors of both AVA and Diapason read aloud their press releases for coming exhibitions\, the recordings were then installed in each other’s gallery space. These pieces play not only on sound art’s investigations of latent sounds\, but on my dual work practice as a musician and a writer. \nIn 2010 I started a project called Title TK with media artist Cory Archangel and curator Howie Chen. Cory\, Howie and I are all guitarists. Considering ourselves a band\, in live appearances we walk onstage with guitars but never plug them in or play; instead we simply talk to each other (mostly about music). These talks are improvised\, and to me represent a negotiation between spoken and musical languages\, underlining the linguistic implications of musical vocabularies and the conversational aspects of group improvisation. They also represent an application of “post- studio art” ideas to music\, in removing what would be expected as essential content from the rock band format. Finally\, they build upon my personal history\, making a conceptual accommodation between my parallel existences in the 90s as a rock band member and free improviser. More recent activities include recording and touring with Lee Ranaldo & the Dust\, an improv trio with Aki Onda and artist/filmmaker Michael Snow\, a duo with Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase\, and a book-length interview with Will Oldham\, Will Oldham on Bonnie “Prince” Billy (Faber & Faber (UK)\, W.W. Norton (US)\, Contra (Spain)\, 2012). \n“Licht composes like the writer that he is. Ideas – simply stated and highly effective – emerge from a collage of everything from loops of raw guitar to radio weather reports.” — Christian Marclay on AL’s double CD A New York Minute in Best of 2003\, ARTFORUM\, December 2003. \n“Be it in indie rock groups\, improv ensembles\, or his solo compositions\, guitarist and writer Alan Licht has spent his career smuggling ideas across the obscured bridge between harmony and noise.” — Matthew Wuethrich\, the WIRE\, June 2008

SUMMARY:In The Sea (Tristan Honsinger\, Nicolas Caloia\, Joshua Zubot)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 3rd @ The Comet \nIN THE SEA\nTristan Honsinger – cello (active since 70’s; recorded w Cecil Taylor\, Derek Bailey\, Peter Brotzmann\, William Parker\, David Toop\, etc; a founder of the ICP Orchestra; and has collaborated with The Pop Group\, The Ex\, Borbetomagus\, etc)\nNicolas Calioa – bass\nJoshua Zubot – violin \n+ an opening set from: \nC.I.G. (Cincinnati Improvisers Group)\nJon Lorenz – sax\nJohn Rich – clarinet\nTim Schwallie – guitar\nWilliam DeWolfe – guitar\nMark Milano – bass\nZach Larabee – percussion \n——————————————————————- \nSaturday\, June 3rd\n9pm / 21+ / Free \nThe Comet\n4579 Hamilton Ave. \n——————————————————————– \nTristan Honsinger started improvising in Montreal more than forty years ago\, prior to his decisive move to Europe\, where he’s been at the centre of improvised music activity ever since. So this group represents an oblique sort of homecoming. Their rapport is obvious\, the results a satisfying mixture of musical empathy and creative conflict. Tristan plays with characteristic daring from his reserves of readymade tune fragments and shards of poetry and into the protean unknown that is the foundation for the best group improvising. Josh Zubot\,and Nicolas Caloia don’t merely follow him there\, but provoke him – and each other – in ways that are\, by turns\, subtle\, assertive\, and irreverent. A superb encounter. \n———————————————————————– \nBorn in New England\, the cellist Tristan Honsinger studied at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. By the ’70s\, the Trans-American had moved to Amsterdam and formed the Instant Composers Pool with drummer Han Bennink and radical pianist Misha Mengelberg. With this avant-jazz group\, his music transcended the classical conservatory background he had and he began to incorporate wild\, free improvisation\, jazz\, and European folk music into his cannon\, not to mention a kinship with Bertolt Brecht theatre\, which would put an edge on performances and recordings that take on experimental strategies\, some of which include what could be considered violent attacks on the instrument. Here he would find a kinship with Cecil Taylor\, who also liked to make small explosions inside his piano. Honsinger worked with the great pianist in Europe\, with Steve Lacy\, Lol Coxhill\, and Louis Moholo among them in the European free jazz community — which\, in the ’70s\, was thriving as far away as Florence\, Italy. Honsinger found a home there in 1978 for a number of years. Working with the more extreme experimental Gruppo Du Improvisazione Nuovo Consonanza (Improvisational Group for New Consonance) members Giancarlo Schiaffini and Gianluigi Trovesi. Having worked with many groups and ad hoc improvisation setting through the years\, interests in theatre\, dance\, and opera influenced his performances considerably. \nHis optimum is as a solo cello improviser\, and on the album A Camels Kiss\, he extracts a dense and unworldly combination of jazz techniques\, text-less vocalizing\, total free improvisation\, hints at J.S. Bach\, quotes from Kurt Weill\, and flirts with the fantasia of gypsy folk music. All with an astounding technique that surpasses many of the greatest of contemporary music interpreters. Often compared to the late Tom Cora\, another outlandish jazz cellist whose love for folk and classical music inflected his improvisations. The range of emotions that is covered in a piece by Tristan Honsinger is striking in that it is very accessible for so-called avant-garde music. In the ’80s\, he recorded for the prestigious FMP label and in the ’90s\, numerous companies\, including Winter and Winter\, I.C.P.\, and legendary jazz archivists Hat Hut from Switzerland. Performing with the Instant Composers Pool\, the group was highlighted at many European jazz festivals if not only for their astounding improvisational musicianship\, but for the theatrical antics — spectacles even more unpredictable than there schizophrenic jazz structures. All written in real-time of course.

SUMMARY:Devastated: a workshop for writing
DESCRIPTION:Devastated: a writing workshop \nThe purpose of this workshop is to explore the creative potential of devastation; great destruction or damage\, overwhelming shock and grief. In such moments\, we become outside of ourselves- and as challenging as it is\, there is great power in both expressing and the expression of such a stark change in perspective. \nBring with you some examples of writing from devastation that you’ve encountered in your life. Songs\, poems\, passages of fiction\, anything. We’ll share and discuss. Then\, we’ll have a guided visioning exercise\, designed to kindly create a hypothetical devastation\, followed by an opportunity to write. Anyone who is interested in sharing their writing for group positive feedback is welcome to do so. \nThere will be some extremely personal and sensitive subject matter expressed during this workshop\, and all participants are expected to observe safer space practices and respect the confidentiality of the other participants. \n– \nChase Public\n1569 Chase Ave\nCincinnati\, OH 45223 \nWednesday\, May 31st\nDoors and chatting 7:00\nWorkshop begins at 7:30 \nFree \nBYOB\, extra respectfully.

SUMMARY:Big Zero Birthday Dance Party
DESCRIPTION:One of our fav hometown heroes is having a birthday with a big zero in it. We thought the best way to celebrate would be to throw a big ole birthday bash to benefit some local orgs that mean a lot to him. Hilly Kenkel and Northside Nick are DJing – so throw some glitter on it and dance your lil hearts out for a good cause!! \nYour donations will benefit three nonprofit funds near and dear to James: 1) the Northside Community Council (which funds lots of great Northside not-for-profit projects)\, 2) the Camp Washington Community Board (funds lots of Camp Washington not-for-profit projects)\, and 3) Caracole (a Northside not-for-profit that provides AIDS services to the entire region). \nP.s. James is one of the folks who brings us the Northside RnR Carnival and spearheads the new pedestrian safety committee happening in Northside\, just to name a couple of the hundreds of rad things he does to make our lives better.
