DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Shear and Michael Welsh\nApril 6th-May 6th 2018\nOpening Reception Friday April 6th 6-10 pm\nArtist dinner Thursday April 5th 7:30pm \nAnytime Dept. is excited to present its final exhibition in the Hoffner Lodge Gallery whistling in the dark with work by Jennifer Shear and Michael Welsh. These artists find common interest in the miscalculations of anthropocentrism and the predictive worlds of science fiction. Shear has been developing her own vernacular of image making since 2004\, furiously collecting images of bodies\, landscapes\, cult ephemera and earthworks from sources that seem to lose their rigid dependence on context the moment she puts them to paper. Shear’s collage works exhibit fragments of past worlds and value systems\, recognizable but reinvented\, each image transformed in its new environment. Welsh’s work confuses notions of value and material pasts\, combining provocations of non-human furniture structures and tiki bar ritualism. Welsh provokes our domestic behaviors and understanding of material purposes by altering the rules of interaction. \n“Well\, it never occurs to us\, then\, that maybe we’re whistling in the dark too!”\n–Terence McKenna     \nJennifer Shear (b. 1987 Taiwan) lives and works in Los Angeles\, California. She ‘s recently shown with Interstate Projects (NYC)\, Commune Press at Midori-So (Tokyo)\, Picture Room (NYC)\, Yale Union (Portland)\, and Low Rence (San Francisco). \nMichael Welsh (b.1983) is an artist living and working in Brooklyn\, NY. He is a founding member of GWC Investigators\, and editor of New World UNLTD. Welsh’s interdisciplinary works have been shown nationally at such venues as Interstate Projects\, Brooklyn\, NY; Essex Flowers\, New York\, NY  Shoot The Lobster\, New York\, NY; High Desert Test Sites\, Joshua Tree\, CA; Printed Matter\, Inc.\, New York\, NY; American Medium\, New York\, NY; GCA\, Brooklyn\, NY; Appendix Project Space\, Portland\, OR;  Extra Extra\, Philadelphia\, PA; Helper Gallery\, Brooklyn\, NY; C.R.E.A.M. Projects\, Brooklyn\, NY; BRIC Arts\, Brooklyn\, NY; AdHoc Gallery\, Brooklyn\, NY; among others. Welsh has been published in print and online by Publication Studio\, Packet Bi-Weekly\, Social Malpractice Publishing\, Queen’s Mob Tea House and his recent book\, Family was be published by maga book in January 2018.

SUMMARY:Bumpin Uglies / Joey Harkum Band / Rockstead
DESCRIPTION:For nearly a decade now\, Bumpin Uglies have been playing their brand of groove-heavy jams – a curiously fun mix of ska\, Reggae and good ole’ punk rock – all while putting strong lyrics at the forefront of the music. It’s a formula that quickly took them from local favorites\, playing around Annapolis\, to a national stage. With a wildly infectious sound\, tattoo-worthy lyrics and an itch to take their music to the masses\, the band piled into the van years ago and have rarely seen home since. \nThe Bumpin Uglies’ origin story begins with singer/guitarist Brandon Hardesty playing open mics around Maryland. He met bassist Dave Wolf not too long after and Bumpin Uglies was born. With a proper set of wheels and TJ Haslett on drums\, they went off to spread their music across the country like modern day Johnny Appleseeds. The group recently added Chad Wright on keyboards\, expanding on their sound.\nRaised on everything from Bad Religion and The Beach Boys to Sublime and Reel Big Fish\, Bumpin Uglies have managed to take inspiration from some of the best out there\, run it through their own distinctive filter and end up with a truly original take on the various genres creating an original hybrid. With a unique sound that’s nearly impossible to ignore\, the band has gotten everyone from dreadlocked kids to PBR-fueled tattooed punks moving their heads to their music at festivals and on headlining tours across the country. \nWhen they aren’t on the road\, they’ve been camped in the studio\, churning out three full lengths\, two EPs and a live record. Their latest\, 2016’s Keep It Together came out on Right Coast Records and is proof that the band has found their groove. The album consists of a dozen stand-out tracks\, any one of which could be considered instant classics for the band. They’re already at work on the follow up\, but true to their rep as being on the never-ending tour\, chances are they’ll be coming to a venue near you soon.

They live at the intersection of Holly Golightly \,Dex Romweber\, Nina Simone\, Al Green\, and Otis Redding. They play from the gut\, heart\, and soul and are rough\, raw\, and real. They will guilt trip you into getting outta your seats\, their dirty showcase further punctuated by 2 backing vocalists who aid in lifting the stage off the floor and blowing the doors off the joint.
