SUMMARY:Open House and Friend-raiser

SUMMARY:Live Soundtrack | Manos: The Hands of Fate
DESCRIPTION:“’Manos: the hands of fate’ is without a doubt the most inept and atrociously awful film ever made. Its poorness is so extreme that of itself it is the film’s strongest selling point.” \nChase Public would be more excited to announce this if we were going to watch a better movie\, but we’re not\, so\, so be it. Electronic musician wizes FRITZ PAPE – NEBBIE LOON – and MARC GOVERNANTI provide a live improvised soundtrack to the famously awful movie MANOS: The Hands of Fate. \nManos: The Hands of Fate is a 1966 American low-budget horror film. It was written\, directed\, and produced by Harold P. Warren who also starred in the film. It is widely recognized to be one of the worst films ever made. The film’s plot revolves primarily around a vacationing family who lose their way on a road trip. After a long drive in the Texas desert\, the family finds themselves trapped at a lodge maintained by a polygamous pagan cult\, and they attempt to escape as the cult’s members decide what to do with them. The film is infamous for its technical deficiencies\, especially its significant editing and continuity flaws; its soundtrack and visuals not being synchronized; tedious pacing; abysmal acting; and several scenes that are seemingly inexplicable or disconnected from the overall plot\, such as a couple making out in a car or The Master’s wives breaking out in catfights. \nWarren was an insurance and fertilizer salesman from El Paso\, Texas\, who produced the film as the result of a bet. He also starred in it\, alongside El Paso theater actors Tom Neyman and John Reynolds. Manos was an independent production by a crew with little or no background or experience in filmmaking and a very limited budget at its disposal. \n– \nChase Public\n1569 Chase Ave\nCincinnati\, OH 45223 \nWednesday\, July 12\nDoors 8:00\nSoundtrack 8:30 \nFree \nBYOB\, Respectfully. Disrespectful B will be shunned with great contempt.

SUMMARY:Josiah Wolf (WHY?)with Ofir Klemperer /Stoop Kids/Hanging Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of twisted experimental jazz\, haze and rock as we welcome in: \n/// josiah wolf with Ofir Klemperer/// \nJosiah Wolf is the drummer and multi-instrumentalist for the band WHY? (www.whywithaquestionmark.com). In 2003 Josiah self-released The josiah EP as a limited run tour CD. In March 2010 he released his first full-length solo LP\, titled Jetlag (www.anticon.com). Following the release he toured solo (opening for WHY?) across Europe. Soon after Liz Hodson joined the band and the duo began touring extensively across the US. Their live arrangement makes for a unique experience with both musicians playing multiple instruments (often at once)\, looping melodies and rhythms and creating interesting textures without the use of prerecorded sound. In the fall of 2010 they recorded a 6 song covers EP titled Under Lovers Covers (josiahwolflizhodson.bandcamp.com). They are currently working on a full length record together that will fuse the sounds of Liz’s vocal melodies and Josiah’s rhythmic stylings. \n/// Stoop Kids /// (New Orleans) \nStoop Kids’ sound is an eclectic mix of soul\, surf\, hip-hop\, doo-wop\, rock\, and jazz with a psychedelic pop aftertaste. This\, combined with their high-energy\, theatrical\, performances\, makes Stoop Kids unique and unpredictable. \n/// Hanging Hearts /// (CHI) \nHanging Hearts is a free-rock spirited Chicago-based trio. Described by European audiences as “hammering the walls between genres\,” their music bridges the gap between jazz\, rock\, and experimental music. The band features Chris Weller on tenor saxophone\, Cole DeGenova on keyboards\, and Devin Drobka on drums. \n$5 at the curtain\nAll Ages

DESCRIPTION:MNATC and Whited Sepulchre Records present: \nMIDWIFE “Like Author\, Like Daughter” LP Release Show \nMidwife (Denver\, CO): Madeline Johnston’s (aka Sister Grotto) moniker under Midwife is a shift from achingly beautiful minimalism to anthemic\, fist-in-the-air choruses rooted in droning overtones and suprisingly strong pop sensibilities. \nhttps://midwifeco.bandcamp.com/album/like-author-like-daughter \nDream Tiger (Cinci): Liz Wolf brings her dynamic and wholly entrancing Dream Tiger project back to the Comet. SUMMARY:Irenka Live in Cincinnati with local artist BubbleTeaKitty
DESCRIPTION:NO COVER | $5 suggested donation\ndoors 8pm | show 9pm\n___________________________ \nIRENKA *\nShaped by the streets of Brussels and Paris\, IRENKA’s colorful music transcends borders and genres effortlessly. She fuses self-penned enchanting melodies with warm smoky vocals in French and English. Her soulful and versatile voice earns comparisons to Annie Lennox\, Gwen Stefani\, Sade\, and Enya\, while her compositions reminisce the Beatles\, Nine Inch Nails and Tori Amos.\nIRENKA moved to Nashville\, TN by herself in 2011. In 2014\, she released her self-produced debut EP Wait 4 It…\, with the sarcastic jazzy “I Don’t Need No Lover”\, the ethereal “Dreamland”\, and the funky French “Comme Si”\, that topped Muse Boat Radio’s charts for 8 weeks at #1. As a French speaking artist\, IRENKA has been featured on Radio Canada and national French TV channel\, France 2. \nPlaying hundreds of shows all over the country from Florida to California\, IRENKA’s shows have been known for their moodiness and stories\, surprising audiences from song to song. In 2016\, IRENKA performed with internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Regi Wooten who described IRENKA’s music as “groovy\, unique and soulful”. \nYou can listen to IRENKA’s music on her website http://www.blackswanworld.com

SUMMARY:Glenn Jones (Thrill Jockey)\, Catfish-Fosco Duo\, Zijnzijn Zijnzij
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 8th \nGlenn Jones\n(Master of American Primitive Guitar. Of Cul De Sac\, Thrill Jockey Records\, did a record with John Fahey!)\nhttp://www.thrilljockey.com/artists/glenn-jones \nBilly Catfish – Pete Fosco Duo\n(Premiere live performance from this hot new guitar duo)\nhttps://thekentuckygremlin.bandcamp.com/album/herzog1 \nZjinzjin Zjinzjin\n(Guitar soundscapes galore)\nhttps://zijnzijnzijnzijn.bandcamp.com \n———————————————– \nThe Comet\n4579 Hamilton Ave\nCincinnati\, OH\n45223 \n9pm / 21+ Free \n———————————————- \nGlenn Jones is a master of American Primitive Guitar\, a style invented in the late 1950s by John Fahey\, whose traditional fingerpicking techniques and wide-ranging influences were used to create modern original compositions. Jones\, who led the post-rock ensemble Cul de Sac\, brings his own made-up tunings\, the use of custom-crafted partial capos\, and a highly skilled picking style on both banjo and guitar\, to create personal compositions that are lyrical\, emotive and elegant. What sets him apart from the myriad guitarists playing today is his ability to tell stories with the guitar and banjo\, and to convey a range of emotions. This process starts with the compositions themselves and carries through to his selection of recording environment and engineer. \nFleeting was recorded in a house on the banks of the Rancocas Creek in Mount Holly\, New Jersey. Cozy\, cluttered with artifacts of a life well-lived (by its owner Bill Bolger)\, the house struck the right note for Jones and his recording engineer\, Laura Baird. Jones in particular likes spaces with character that are remote from the day-to-day world. Jones and Baird made no attempt to soundproof the recording environment\, happy to let sounds filtering in from the outdoors to become part of the listening experience. \nOne of Fleeting’s underlying themes is the past and the way places and people resonate in our lives. Jones reflects on the brevity — the fleetingness — of all things\, while also looking towards the future. “Spokane River Falls\,” which Jones calls his “water song\,” recalls the all-but-forgotten city of Spokane\, Washington\, where he was born. “Cléo Awake” and “Cléo Asleep” share the same melodies and the same inspiration — the newborn child of Jones’ friends (the conceit of “Cléo Asleep” is that Jones plays with a mute on the banjo — called The Happy Wife Banjo Mute — so as not to disturb Cléo\, no matter where in the world she is!). “In Durance Vile\,” one of the album’s more dissonant\, prickly tracks\, was originally written to accompany three poems by the abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky\, whose texts Jones found “absurd\, playful . . . sometimes cruel.” Two of the album’s songs are dedications to fellow guitarists (and friends) Robbie Basho and Michael Chapman. \nJones turned away from standard tuning years ago\, inventing tunings as a way of escaping the known. The pieces he writes in these tunings are his way of navigating new and unfamiliar landscapes. “But it’s my hope\,” he says\, “that what you hear are not the tunings and partial capos and all that\, but the music — the feeling within these pieces.” Fleeting is a journey that Jones invites his listeners to take with him.
