DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Inkwell Open Mic and Reading Series\, happening every second Monday of the month at Urban Artifact. The show starts with an open mic\, followed this month by our feature performers\, Bitch’s Brew members Avril\, Abiyah\, Elese\, and Murray. \nThis all-ages event has a suggested $2 cover to help support feature artists\, but no one will be turned away at the door. Bring your words (up to two poems and five minutes total per performer) to share\, or just come enjoy some of Cincinnati’s finest craft beer and listen. \nAbout the features:\nAbiyah waxes poetic on the page\, the stage\, the beat\, and the turntable in her various side-hustles as a published and performing poet\, a multi-genre singer and melodic rapper\, an all-vinyl dancehall reggae DJ (Queen City Imperial Soundsystem)\, and\, most recently\, as a music journalist. During the day\, she flips data on its head and analyzes it until it’s dead.  \nMurray is a Georgia Peach\, transplanted in Ohio. Her first name isn’t relevant\, because she probably won’t allow you to use it anyway. Her writing journey has been about finding balance between that rhythmic cadence of spoken word\, and a slower\, sensual\, almost sinister flow; both of which come naturally to her. She mostly writes to heal herself. \nElese Daniel is a poet in Cincinnati\, Ohio. She is trying. She rides a bicycle in the street. Her work often considers intimacy and being. It is rarely published. \nAvril Thurman was born in a log cabin in Brown County\, Indiana. She has shown visual work in Brooklyn\, Memphis\, Covington\, Philadelphia\, Reims (France)\, and many independent Cincinnati galleries. Her poems have been published in the Madcap Poetry Review\, and in Forklift\, Ohio: A Journal of Poetry\, Cooking\, and Light Industrial Safety. Avril is currently operating out of Cincinnati\, where she now has nine kinds of hot sauce.

DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Shear and Michael Welsh\nApril 6th-May 6th 2018\nOpening Reception Friday April 6th 6-10 pm\nArtist dinner Thursday April 5th 7:30pm \nAnytime Dept. is excited to present its final exhibition in the Hoffner Lodge Gallery whistling in the dark with work by Jennifer Shear and Michael Welsh. These artists find common interest in the miscalculations of anthropocentrism and the predictive worlds of science fiction. Shear has been developing her own vernacular of image making since 2004\, furiously collecting images of bodies\, landscapes\, cult ephemera and earthworks from sources that seem to lose their rigid dependence on context the moment she puts them to paper. Shear’s collage works exhibit fragments of past worlds and value systems\, recognizable but reinvented\, each image transformed in its new environment. Welsh’s work confuses notions of value and material pasts\, combining provocations of non-human furniture structures and tiki bar ritualism. Welsh provokes our domestic behaviors and understanding of material purposes by altering the rules of interaction. \n“Well\, it never occurs to us\, then\, that maybe we’re whistling in the dark too!”\n–Terence McKenna     \nJennifer Shear (b. 1987 Taiwan) lives and works in Los Angeles\, California. She ‘s recently shown with Interstate Projects (NYC)\, Commune Press at Midori-So (Tokyo)\, Picture Room (NYC)\, Yale Union (Portland)\, and Low Rence (San Francisco). \nMichael Welsh (b.1983) is an artist living and working in Brooklyn\, NY. He is a founding member of GWC Investigators\, and editor of New World UNLTD. Welsh’s interdisciplinary works have been shown nationally at such venues as Interstate Projects\, Brooklyn\, NY; Essex Flowers\, New York\, NY  Shoot The Lobster\, New York\, NY; High Desert Test Sites\, Joshua Tree\, CA; Printed Matter\, Inc.\, New York\, NY; American Medium\, New York\, NY; GCA\, Brooklyn\, NY; Appendix Project Space\, Portland\, OR;  Extra Extra\, Philadelphia\, PA; Helper Gallery\, Brooklyn\, NY; C.R.E.A.M. Projects\, Brooklyn\, NY; BRIC Arts\, Brooklyn\, NY; AdHoc Gallery\, Brooklyn\, NY; among others. Welsh has been published in print and online by Publication Studio\, Packet Bi-Weekly\, Social Malpractice Publishing\, Queen’s Mob Tea House and his recent book\, Family was be published by maga book in January 2018.

We’ll be tapping the keg at 4PM each Friday and pouring the delicious libation until it’s gone.  \nWe know when you drink beer you get hungry. That’s why we’ll also have our friends Django Western Taco slinging tacos and chips w/ Guacamole or Salsa every Friday evening from 6-10 PM (or until they run out). We’ll be talking to Josh each week to let him know what we’ll be tapping and he’s going to create a taco that pairs well with the beer. \nBeer and tacos\,what more could you really ask for in life.

SUMMARY:Bumpin Uglies / Joey Harkum Band / Rockstead
DESCRIPTION:For nearly a decade now\, Bumpin Uglies have been playing their brand of groove-heavy jams – a curiously fun mix of ska\, Reggae and good ole’ punk rock – all while putting strong lyrics at the forefront of the music. It’s a formula that quickly took them from local favorites\, playing around Annapolis\, to a national stage. With a wildly infectious sound\, tattoo-worthy lyrics and an itch to take their music to the masses\, the band piled into the van years ago and have rarely seen home since. \nThe Bumpin Uglies’ origin story begins with singer/guitarist Brandon Hardesty playing open mics around Maryland. He met bassist Dave Wolf not too long after and Bumpin Uglies was born. With a proper set of wheels and TJ Haslett on drums\, they went off to spread their music across the country like modern day Johnny Appleseeds. The group recently added Chad Wright on keyboards\, expanding on their sound.\nRaised on everything from Bad Religion and The Beach Boys to Sublime and Reel Big Fish\, Bumpin Uglies have managed to take inspiration from some of the best out there\, run it through their own distinctive filter and end up with a truly original take on the various genres creating an original hybrid. With a unique sound that’s nearly impossible to ignore\, the band has gotten everyone from dreadlocked kids to PBR-fueled tattooed punks moving their heads to their music at festivals and on headlining tours across the country. \nWhen they aren’t on the road\, they’ve been camped in the studio\, churning out three full lengths\, two EPs and a live record. Their latest\, 2016’s Keep It Together came out on Right Coast Records and is proof that the band has found their groove. The album consists of a dozen stand-out tracks\, any one of which could be considered instant classics for the band. They’re already at work on the follow up\, but true to their rep as being on the never-ending tour\, chances are they’ll be coming to a venue near you soon.
