How do our individual and collective experiences become our stories and histories? How do we make sense and build relationships through the intended and unintended consequences of our actions and interactions? \nHuman beings have sought places for ritual\, refuge\, and mutual learning since the beginning of time. We gather to learn with\, and from\, others within formal and informal settings; we retreat to integrate our acquired knowledge. The urban landscape offers us a multitude of opportunities to make sense of our surroundings and leave (im)permanent marks on human-made and natural ecosystems. \nInformed by David Thornburg’s three archetypal learning spaces (Campfires\, Caves\, and Watering Holes)\, this installation explores contained and open physical spaces embedded in the urban landscape as a collective weaving of stories\, histories\, and (in)visible relationships to space and community. \nIn the space between what we can and cannot see\, we explore the tension between intentional and unintentional\, permanent and impermanent\, private and public\, individual and collective—the liminal spaces where learning\, growing\, and relating happen. \nEnter. SUMMARY:The barometric pressure is all over the place
DESCRIPTION:September 29th–October 29th\, 2017\nOpening Reception September 29th 6pm-10pm \nAnytime Dept. is excited to present “the barometric pressure is all over the place\,” a two person exhibition with Laura Bernstein and Daniel Glendening.  \nAll works are bodies.  \nBarometric pressure is the weight of the air\, materializing matter. I have a headache and maybe need to get some sleep but the pressure is keeping me up. Waking to this leaden air my wrists are swollen. Holding signs that feel like stones\, my body responding to the pressure\, noticing something growing that should not be and all the while marching with thousands of bodies. Or is it in my ankles\, yes the ankles are tired\, from walking and exaggerated movements that these new growths have spurred. My feet seem enlarged. It could be the weighted air or the changes or the marching in cement. I am reaching towards a research of safety.\nSome authoritative beast is stretching its shadow over me now\, recording me and inventing me as if I were the other of myself and placing markers as if in deli case selections. So I take a number and wait. \nThe exhibition looks at two artists who are working towards a bodied future from a disembodied present. Laura Bernstein’s work comes from a larger project that\nproposes a near-future narrative of human evolution where humanoid creatures are studied and researched. This work is the proposed document of that exchange\, focusing on one of the imagined beasts known as Panotti whose large ears afford it extraordinary sensitivity and other evolutionary specifics that allow them to survive in the age of No Ozone.\nDaniel Glendening is composing complex taxonomies of the physical here and now politic colliding with painterly investigations of life forms and forces beyond the known planes of existence. His research serves as a portal to territories normally reserved for the worlds of  science fiction. Leaving these outer and imagined spaces a mystery\, Glendening returns with a peculiar kind of document which reflects the voyage the arrival and the return.  \nDaniel J Glendening is an artist and maker of science fictions\, and a founding member of the artist-led paranormal research team GWC\, Investigators. He has produced projects with organizations including High Desert Test Sites\, Amur Initiatives\, Appendix Project Space\, and Spaceness at the Sou’Wester\, has been in residence at The Wassaic Project in Wassaic\, NY and Rupert Centre for Art and Education in Vilnius\, Lithuania. He has published work with Social Malpractice Publishing\, Publication Studio\, Panhandler\, Drain Magazine and others. Past work has included scouring the night skies for UFOs\, hunting for ghosts in Eastern Oregon\, and broadcasting messages to outer space. His first novel\, The Gardener\, The Visionary\, and The Traveller\, is forthcoming in September with Small Editions in Brooklyn\, NY. He currently teaches at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Portland State University in Portland\, OR. \nLaura Bernstein (Brooklyn\, NY) is a multidisciplinary artist who constructs scenarios and vignettes through immersive installation\, performance\, and video in which her fictional characters and creatures engage with their environment\, exploring the relationship between human and animal\, exemplary and freakish\, public ritual and private behavior. Bernstein is currently working on a project that draws from mythology and Medieval Bestiaries to examine the relationship between art and science\, imagination and reality\, nature and ecology.  She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Bernstein is a 2017-18 Awardee of the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program. She was awarded a Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship (2014) and was a fellow at The Lighthouse Works (2016)\, and Vermont Studio Center (2013)\, as well an apprentice at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia (2013). She has shown her work in Philadelphia\, New York\, Chicago and Austria and her art is part of the permanent collection of the National Dance Institute\, New York\, NY. Bernstein participated in The Bronx Museum of the Arts AIM program (2016-17) and its Fourth AIM Biennial.  In Spring 2018\, she will have a solo exhibition at NURTUREart\, in Brooklyn\, NY.
