SUMMARY:I'm Not Your Negro-Film and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:It takes a special container to have difficult conversations. Rev. Derek Terry and Meg Bruck—a male\, African American UCC minister\, and a female practitioner of Zen— are friends\, veteran facilitators\, and racial justice activist\, joining the Hive to make space for such a conversation. We’ll gather first for potluck and setting the stage. Then 90 minutes to view the film in its entirety\,  followed by another 45 minutes for facilitated discussion. Please be intentional to participate in the entire time if you register.  \nAbout the Film: \nIn 1979\, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project\, “Remember This House.” The book was to be a revolutionary\, personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers\, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King\, Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987\, he left behind only 30 completed pages of this manuscript. Filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. \nThis 90 minute PG-13 movie\, Nominated for an Oscar in 2016\, is a compilation of footage from Balwin as well as cultural references spaning from Doris Day to the blatk panthers. Baldwin asks compelling questions about racism in America in the 60s\, 70s\, and 80s and leaves viewers in 2017 to consider how are these thoughts remain in play today\, in us all. \nAbout the Conversation: \nAt the Hive\, we shape these and other similar events like Courage to Connect\, and Café Cultura\, as Brave Space\, meaning\, they are never perfectly “safe space” but that the invitation and facilatation is rooted in an intention to make brave space together for difficult yet tranformative relational possibilties. We’d be honored to have any who share that intention to join the event.  \nThere is no cost for the event. The faciliators are dontating their time. But we accept donations to help make such events possible at the Hive in months to come.

Named by Rita Dove as one of thirteen “young poets to watch\,” he has also received a “Discovery/The Nation Prize and a Cleveland Arts Prize. In 2018\, he was named the second Poet Laureate of the State of Ohio. A co-founder of Brews + Prose at Market Garden Brewery and Cleveland Book Week\, he teaches at Case Western Reserve University and lives in Cleveland\, where he was born and raised.  \nMegan Martin – is the author of the tiny fiction collection NEVERS (Caketrain 2014) and a book of prose poems\, Sparrow & Other Eulogies (Gold Wake 2011). DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Inkwell Open Mic and Reading Series\, happening every second Monday of the month at Urban Artifact. The show starts with an open mic\, followed this month by our feature performer\, outgoing Cincinnati Poet Laureate Pauletta Hansel. A new city Poet Laureate will begin their term this year\, so come see one of Pauletta’s last performances while she holds the title!  \nThis all-ages event has a suggested $2 cover to help support feature artists\, but no one will be turned away at the door. Bring your words (up to two poems and five minutes total per performer) to share\, or just come enjoy some of Cincinnati’s finest craft beer and listen. \nAbout the feature:\nPoet\, Memoirist\, Teacher and Editor Pauletta Hansel was named the first Poet Laureate of Cincinnati in 2016. She is author of five poetry collections\, most recently Palindrome (Dos Madres Press\, 2017)\,  Tangle (Dos Madres Press\, 2015)\, The Lives We Live in Houses (Wind Publications\, 2011) and What I Did There (Dos Madres Press\, 2011). Pauletta’s poetry and prose has been featured recently in journals including Talisman\, Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine\, Atlanta Review\, ABZ Journal\, Postcard Poems and Prose\, Still: The Journal\, The Mom Egg\, Penwood Review and Appalachian Journal and anthologized in A Gathering at the Forks; Old Wounds\, New Words; A Kentucky Christmas; Listen Here: Women Writing in Appalachia; the Motif series and Creatures of Habitat and Crossing Lines.  Her poems have been featured on The Writer’s Almanac and Ted Kooser’s American Life in Poetry.  \nPauletta has served as Writer in Residence at Thomas More College’s Creative Writing Vision Program and at WordPlay\, a literary and literacy organization for younger writers. She leads community writing workshops and retreats in the Greater Cincinnati area and beyond. She is a current editor of Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel\, the literary publication of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative. Pauletta received her MFA from Queens University of Charlotte. Originally from southeastern Kentucky\, Pauletta lives in Cincinnati with her husband\, Owen Cramer.

Join us! for the Chase Public Book Swap\, cohosted by Lauren Byrd. \nHere’s the format:  Each person will bring one book. It should be a book that you enjoy\, that you sincerely recommend- but know\, you won’t be getting it back. It will be a true gift from you to another member of your community.  From that book\, you will have identified a particularly interesting excerpt or quote\, and written or typed it out on a seperate piece of paper.  We will be using these excerpts and quotes as the content for the swap.  The notes will be placed on a table in the center of the room\, and as the swap is initiated\, we will all take turns reading the excerpts at random.  We’ll then proceed White Elephant style around the room until all of the notes are selected.
