SUMMARY:Buggs Tha Rocka / Trademark Aaron & Aaron Roy / Macho Means
DESCRIPTION:$5 tix /// All Ages \n/// BUGGS THA ROCKA /// \nIn resistance to commercial gangsta rap\, Buggs Tha Rocka performance of shrewd and cultured rhymes maintains golden-era techniques while carving a creative outlet for the succeeding hip-hop generation. Hailed by his peers as a “rapper’s rapper”\, Buggs tha Rocka has reinforced underground hip-hop with his eccentric lyricism and versatile flows. \nBorn Speed Walton III on February 16th\, Buggs was raised in a full house of family in Cincinnati\, Ohio. He began rapping at age of 6\, Buggs credits “Life After Death” by Notorious B.I.G which kept him well intrigued with making a hip hop a career\, Buggs’ earliest recordings told stories and demonstrated wordplay with a clever mix of hip hop and rock. Also drawing inspiration from artists such as Andre 3000\, Q-Tip\, Missy Elliott\, Pharrell\, and jay-z. Buggs enhanced his skills to exude a smart and stylish sensibility. He ultimately developed a niche for pairing eclectic samples with amusing and conscious rhyme schemes. \n/// Trademark Aaron & Aaron Roy/// \nTrademark Aaron’s rap career started in the high school classroom\, passing battle rhymes as notes to other classmates. He didn’t know what to do with his writings until he found hip-hip. Months later he hit his first recording studio and hasn’t missed a beat since writing and recording tracks\, performing live\, and collaborating with other artists. \nTrademark Aaron has an intelligent\, honest\, and relatable sound that’s accessible for the masses. Spitting solid punch lines\, quick whit\, and vivid stories depicting his thoughts and feelings of our world and himself. With three albums under his belt: The Sideshow\, Make Room\, and Prelude To Greatness\, he’s proved he’s ready for “His spot under the bright lights.” Making music for the people\, “I do this for yall’ as much as I do it for me.” Trademark Aaron carries a positive togetherness attitude on his path to greatness. \n/// MachoMeans /// \nhttp://www.machomeans.bandcamp.com/ \n/// VuSkeen /// \nhttp://www.bornfreeent.com/ \n/// High Rollers /// \n/// Devin Burgess /// \nhttp://www.soundcloud.com/devinburgess \n/// Cadre ///

SUMMARY:After Walker Evans - Chase Public Response Project XXII
DESCRIPTION:We announce the 22nd installment of the Chase Public Response Project: On May 18th\, six exciting artists and thinkers have been invited to each perform ten minute responses to Photographer Sherrie Levine’s 1981 series “After Walker Evans\,” in which the artist shot reproductions of Depression-era photographs by Walker Evans (which were made ubiquitous after being featured in the book “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men”) and then presented them as her own artwork without manipulation of the images. \nThe respondents have been given total autonomy to respond however feels most appropriate to them; which could vary from musical performance\, to poetry\, dance\, lecture\, rant\, powerpoint\, game\, anything. \nTHE RESPONDENTS// \nMatthew Shackleford | Elyse Johnson\nRachelle Caplan | Tyrone Williams\nChris Glass | Abby Friend\nOm Srivastava \nABOUT THE CHASE PUBLIC RESPONSE PROJECT//\nInspired by Pianist Brianna Matzke’s “The Stockhausen Response Project\,” The Chase Public Response Project is an opportunity for creators and audiences to interact with art in a new way. SUMMARY:Goran Ivanovic Trio / The Clock Reads / Kumasi /Those Manic Seas
DESCRIPTION:/// Goran Ivanovic Trio /// 9 pm \nGoran Ivanovic\nOne of the most versatile\, skilled\, and curious musicians in Chicago\, guitarist Goran Ivanovic has built a career built upon exploration. Born and raised in Croatia\, he was in the midst of studying at the prestigious Mozarteum University in Salzburg\, Austria with masters like Elliot Fisk and Joaquin Clerch when his parents (his father is a Serb\, his mother a Bosnian Croat) were expelled in the late 90s; the family was granted asylum in the US and they settled in Chicago. Since his arrival he’s displayed a deep interest in collaboration\, steadily expanding his stylistic range well beyond the European classical music and Balkan sounds he was fluently versed in when he arrived. These days his repertoire not only incorporates those disciplines\, but jazz and flamenco as well. He’s recorded duet albums with the great Pakistani-Chilean jazz guitarist Fareed Haque as well as Greek-American musician Andreas Kapsalis. He’s a key member of the quartet Eastern Blok with Matt Ulery\, Doug Rosenberg\, and Michael Caskey\, a combo that deftly surveys the folk music of Macedonia\, Bulgaria\, and Serbia in a distinctly jazz-oriented context\, embroidering timeless Balkan melodies and rhythms with sophisticated improvisational gambits. Most recently\, Ivanovic released an eponymous trio album with bassist Ulery and percussionist Pete Tashjian where he’s achieved a stunning assimilation of his many influences\, creating a hybrid all his own. Reviewing the new album for All About Jazz\, Budd Kopman wrote\, “It is easy to get lost in Ivanovic’s technique\, especially if one plays (or attempts to play) Classical style guitar\, in a jazz style or not.” The trio’s agility has also been noted. As Jeff Elbel wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times\, “The trio are recognized for their individual virtuosity\, but they show particular excellence as a unit able to stop on a dime and twist gracefully through the trickiest hairpin turns together on local stages.” \n/// Kumasi /// 1030pm \nKumasi is the brainchild of Cincinnati-based musician Luke Pace-Scrivener. While working on a solo album with Ben Cochran at Soap Floats Recording\, the two decided to put together a band to record and perform some of Luke’s more pop-oriented\, electric material. \nThey were lucky enough to welcome two tour-de-forces to the group: Psycho D and Aaron Disney. \nThe goal from the beginning was simple – let the songs themselves be the deciding force in all things. Because of this\, and the ability of the members to play multiple instruments\, Kumasi is unrestrained by arrangements\, instrumentation\, or genre\, delivering piano-driven infectious pop ditties\, rockers punctuated with screaming guitar\, and jazzy grooves filled with horns. \nKumasi knows no bounds\, but maintains cohesion through brilliant songwriting and lyricism. \n/// The Clock Reads /// 11:30pm \nThe Clock Reads\, hailing from Pittsburgh\, PA\, draw on a diverse range of musical tastes to form their unique sound. Formed in 2013 and fully fledged by 2014\, the band is comprised of recent graduates of the University of Pittsburgh. With roots in traditional rock\, jam\, and jazz styles\, the band’s repertoire has spanned the genres of space-jazz\, to classic funk and traditional jam. \nThe Clock crafts their sound from the music that is constantly surrounding their lives. Their arsenal of original tunes is as varied as their musical tastes. The backbone of their sound is formed by tight communication\, often allowing the band to transcend the “known” and “recognizable” into uncharted territory. This energy creates an exciting environment for both the band and the audience. \nThe Clock Reads has quickly made a name for themselves in the local music scene\, playing major venues throughout Pittsburgh\, and several festivals in the surrounding areas. They have received critical acclaim for being “one of Pittsburgh’s best up and coming bands of 2016″ by CBS Pittsburgh. \n/// Those Manic Seas /// 1230 \nHailing from Nashville\, TN // Richmond\, VA\, Those Manic Seas is a dynamic four piece group that combines elements of post rock and shoegaze to create unique\, danceable songs and lists bands such as Interpol\, the Killers and Mutemath as influences. Their debut Headache/Heartache 7” help them expand their reach outside of Virginia. The band has since toured the US and Canada extensively. \nThe band released their full length debut\, ‘Telegenic’\, on April 21st\, 2017. \nThe band consists of drummer Daniel Medley\, guitarist Drew Rollo\, bassist Justin Jones and our vocalist Kilroy. \nFree Event\nAll Ages

SUMMARY:Timeless Japan: a photography opening
DESCRIPTION:Timeless Japan: A Photography Exhibit\nHelen Rindsberg \nDrop by to see the opening on Friday\, May 12\, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. \nGuitar music by Todd Juengling\nMeet Helen Rindsberg and connect with new and old friends alike.\nWine\, tea\, and nibbles provided \nShow open: May 12 – July 28\, 2017 \nTimeless Japan presents eight photos that capture Japanese landscapes\, rural\, urban and religious. They are bold color studies of cultural traditions from rice fields to shrine deities\, subjects reaching back hundreds of years yet still vibrantly alive in the 21st century. \nArtist Statement:\nMy passions are teaching\, photography and Japan. Photography is my means of personal expression and appreciation of what is beautiful and important. It’s a way for me to help people see the world in a new way. The photographs in this exhibit are part of my efforts to capture the enduring cultural traditions of Japan and share their energy with others. \nBiography:\nHelen Rindsberg is the President of the Cincinnati Asian Art Society and in her own words “I’ve been crazy about Japan since I was nine years old.” She has been a teacher and administrator in Cincinnati since 1972\, working with students from junior high school to college. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelors and Masters of Arts in Art Education and is currently an adjunct professor there. \nIn 1984 Helen won a fellowship to study the economy of Japan. That three-week trip began an amazing personal journey. She has traveled to Japan 16 more times\, most recently as co-leader of a trip from the art museum. She and her husband have hosted 18 Japanese college students for anything from six months to five years. Their extended family now includes 21 “grandchildren” and has helped deepen her love and knowledge of the Japanese culture. \nA docent at the Cincinnati Art Museum since 2004\, Helen specializes in tours of the Asian art collection and helps with training for docents and teachers. Helen is also a gardener and Director of Cincinnati Dayton Taiko\, a traditional Japanese drum group.
